Detailed Lock Instructions for Uphill Swim |
| |
Before You Start:
- Though the lock model is built to withstand hard use, it is not unbreakable.
Be careful not to put any weight on the unit.
- Remember, when you work with water things tend to get wet; especially if
your not paying attention to what you are doing.
- The default position for all valves is closed. If you open one, remember
to close it. If you don't, you might get wet.
- If you are not sure what will happen, give it a try and find out. Most
of the learning from this module will come from making mistakes. Note that
if you make a mistake, you might get wet.
- It is a good idea to have a towel or two in case you get wet.
Going Up the Lock
- Make sure all the valves are closed. To close the valves move the valve handle perpendicular to the valve.
- Fill the supply bottle with water.
- Start with boat in lock #1.
- Fill lock #1 by opening the inlet valve and control valve #1. Fill the lock to about 2 cm below the edge of the lock.
- Open valve #2 and fill lock #2 until the water level in lock #2 is even with the water level in lock #1.
- Lift gate #1, thus connecting lock #1 and #2, give the boat a tap to navigate it through the lock, replace gate #1.
- Repeat procedure to move boat between locks #2 and #3, and locks #3 and #4.
 |
- Make sure all the valves are closed.
- Since you just moved the boat from lock #3 to lock #4 the water levels in these two locks should be even. Starting with the boat in lock #4 turn the boat around so it is facing "downhill".
- Open gate #3 and move boat into lock #3.
- Open drain valve (be sure the tube is in the bucket or you will have a wet floor). Open valve #3 and drain lock #3 until the water level is even with the water level in lock #2. When the water levels in lock #3 and #2 are even, close valve #3.
- Open gate #2 and move boat into lock #2.
- Repeat procedure to move boat between lock #2 and #1.
